Types of methodology

This is by no means intended as either an exhaustive or particualrly standard view. It is almost entirely wholly subjective - but then again, what did you expect?

Waterfall Agile Creative

Production

I didn't know it at the time, but the production methodology that I created has many similarities with the ISO 13407 standard, which provides guidance on how to run user-centred design projects. But then again, any vaguely sensible way of designing anything that is a fusion of ideas, digital technology and people will resemble what follows: a good instance of a (meta? Interesting!) design pattern methinks.

I always maintained that this production methodology was stupidly, ludicrously simple: its only got five (5) components, after all. But a lot of people seemed to get confused about it: my poor explanations I guess.

  • Discovery - requirements capture, by another name.
  • Origination - generating solutions; (specifically) thinking creatively
  • Definiton - writing stuff down
  • Implementation - generating working code and beautiful assets
  • Delivery - putting it out there; celebrating

This simple way of doing things is illustrated in the two diagrams that follow (click to see larger versions).
